Top Five Cheap or Free Games to Beat the Recession
I know I could have just called the episode “Recessionware” and not had such a long title, but this is my first top 5 of anything and I kind of wanted to showcase that a bit. Now mind you, I’m not conforming to some kind of Top (insert # here) fad - I had been thinking of doing an episode like this for a while and the top 5 format seemed to be to best way to deliver the information.
Some of you may think that a top 5 list is an easy episode to create - that these things just kind of happen. That you wake up one morning and say - you know what - we’ll do a top 5 list and it will be this this this this and this. Well let me tell you… that is not what happened in this episode. All sorts of research and decision making went into this list. Much like a mix tape (or mix cd, or even *gasp* a playlist) much thought and careful selection needs to go into such a list. Research was done, lists were put together, lists were taken apart, and the final list that you are viewing is the one that I thought was the best at the time. I’m sure months from now I may look at this list and think, ah man - can I do a trade? But right now I’m feeling pretty good about it.
Who knows - maybe we’ll do another top 5 cheap or free games list in the future… hey internet folks - you have any thoughts on that? Feel free to chime in.
Oh and before I forget - The Game List with Links:
5. Carneyvale Showtime
4. Cave Story
3. Metro Rules of Conduct
2. Knytt
1. And Yet it Moves
Have Fun!!!!

This is great and thank you for another well earned smirk for referencing ‘High Fidelity’ again.

Z,
I loved this review. You do great stuff for the everyday gamer, and person who can’t run out and buy the latest thing every Tuesday (like me). I also enjoy your mellow tone. I am a big fan of AVGN and Angry Joe and Spoony, etc, but you’re a nice break from all that angst and rage. Your calm demeanour is deeply appreciated.

p.s. If you run into Tom Green again, tell him we miss him back home in Canada.

The Path is a very cool game, trippy and scary all at the same time. - $10 ( PC / Mac)

And to extend on sumo’s comment, I wish I wouldn’t seen this earlier cause Steam had a sale on the full version of the Penumbra trilogy for $5… It’s over now though

Little Miss Gamer, you are a lifesaver to the poor and downtrodden gamer. Thank you very much for this informative article.

Wow. Just, wow.
When I decided to send you an email, I really wasn’t expecting you’d actually read it in public… I really wasn’t prepared for that… it was the best unbirthday present ever!
And now, my two cents on the topic at hand: first of all, thanks for making me discover Knytt. I’m a heavy PC gamer, and I love that kind of exploring, puzzle solving games. Actually, I have a similar recommendation: DROD, from Caravel Games. It’s free (sort of, only the first game is free, but it’s huge), usable in PC and Linux (sorry, no Mac version yet), and it features some really head-scratching puzzles. Lots of hours of fun, I assure you.

You could have just asked a few linux people what they are playing now and you would have a whole list of good recessionware. Here’s few of my personal favorites
Battle for Wesnoth http://wesnoth.org/
It’s really good turn based strategy game. Some people are complaining that the gameplay is too simple because there’s almost no economic aspect but I think it’s great, and it’s not just my opinion.
Dofus http://www.dofus.com
I really recommend this one for any mmorpg fan. Dofus is not just another mmo it’s a tactical mmo, it’s kinda like chess but with spells and weapons. You can play it for free as long as you want on a small part of the world but the fun starts when you subscribe. For three months I payed about 23$ CAN so I still count this game as a recessionware.
Atmosphir http://atmosphir.com/
This is a simple action game but there is one thing that makes it unique, all levels are being made by players. There is literally thousands of levels to beat and the number is growing. And because there’s so many people who design the levels all of them are different. The game is still in beta stage but as far as I know it’s supposed to be free when it comes out. And getting into the beta tests isn’t hard, you just have to sign in and wait.
Teeworlds http://teeworlds.com/
Teeworlds is a great online action game. I wasted long hours playing it and I think it was worth it.
Phun http://www.phunland.com
I’m not sure if I can call it a game (according to the website it’s a 2D physical sandbox) but it’s free and fun to play so I’ll put that on my list. In phun we are just given some space and we can create anything we want to. It takes some time and patience to learn how to use all the functions but it’s rewarding.
All of these games are available for Linux, MacOS and Windows

The link for Metro Rules of Conduct doesn’t work. Does anyone know of another site that has the game?
